about

Recorded Spring 1994.

As we were spending a lot of time recording at home, we got the old family stereo out of the loft to use for monitoring. It was one of those old Hitachi jobs with a turntable and tape deck but the speakers were really dull and crap-sounding.

One of our favourite things at this point was attempting to do cack-handed scratching on the turntable, as evidenced here. We'd remove the belt from the turntable (we quickly found that we couldn't do proper scratching).

Obviously the basis of this track is the end-section of "When I Was a Painter" by the Breeders from 'Pod' - it has a really long playout which determined the length of each section - sounds lazy but this was a time before samplers!

Other vinyl getting mangled here includes:
- "White Light White Heat" by the Velvets (notably "go-go-go-go-go man" and final chord from 'Sister Ray', plus feedback from "I Heard Her Call My Name")
- The "Jesus Christ Superstar" soundtrack ('Herod's Song' in particular)

One of the main albums we used to use was a collection of Norwegian Electronic Music that my old music teacher gave to me and I still have.

No, it ISN'T as good as it sounds.

about

Johnny Domino Derby, UK

Giles and Steve formed JOHNNY DOMINO in the summer of 1993.
Over the next 3-4 years they recorded over 100 songs (known as THE SHITHOUSE MASTERS) on a series of knackered 4-track recorders, drafting in other players on an ad-hoc basis.
Long-term SHITHOUSE alumni Jim became a full-time Domino in 1996, followed by Marc.
Johnny Domino played their final gig on December 23, 2006 at The Vaults, Derby.
